Busyness has two definitions per dictionary.com, 1. the quality or condition of being busy. 2. lively but meaningless activity. The second definition applied to the busyness I experienced over the past several years. What kept me busy? It’s what keeps most millennials busy, their day job which in today’s world requires both days and evenings. I’ve recently resigned from my position that occupied my time and drained me of my energy and that caused me to neglect all of my creative ventures.
After a month of detoxing, I’m finally feeling that much needed reset. I’m taking the time to follow after my passion, design. I stepped away from my field of study, interior design for a few years to work in an entirely different field. While this expanded my skill set, it made me realize how much of an appreciation I have for the design field. I am currently revamping my design skills with the study of AutoCAD, Revit and Sketchup. On the artistic front, practicing my drawing and sketching skills. I will be using this blog to document the process. Along with the revamp of my design skills, I’m also taking up sewing for the use of both interior projects and apparel. First interior design projects, this includes curtains, tablecloths, chair cushions, etc. Once I develop a steady hand behind the sewing machine and build up my confidence, I will start to include clothing projects. Photography is another venture that I will be dedicating time and energy. Like this site, my photography site, heather-anne.com hasn’t been updated for a great while. I will be sharing posts monthly on that site.
Yes, I am keeping myself busy during my time off, but I no longer feel that I suffer from busyness. I don’t feel compelled to keep myself busy. Over time, remaining consistently busy built up this anxiety that if I wasn’t working on something, that I was wasting time. It put me in a state of just doing instead of my default and beneficial setting of ‘be the sponge’, absorbing what is around me, being inspired and acting upon that inspiration. I try to remind myself daily where I was at (mouse in the wheel) and where I choose to be (duck on the water).
I am not a blogger, instead I am a designer who is using a blog to showcase my projects and musings on various subjects. Updating this site will help to keep my self in check, to ensure that I am following through on my multiple projects and areas of study.
